It has long been thought that KRRAS is funded in full by the counties it serves. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Our facility, often overcrowded, is a volunteer-based organization often depending on donations provided by community members as well as businesses.
The Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter Society, Inc. (KRRAS) is a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) located in Hazard, Kentucky. The Shelter facilitates and cares for stray, abandoned, and surrendered animals in Breathitt, Knott, Letcher, and Perry counties. With an average intake of over three hundred animals per month, the center works diligently to find foster care and forever homes for all animals as well as a spay and neuter program. Over the last six years, KRRAS has been able to successfully save over 90 percent of the animals, and this is in part due to the relationships with over 30 rescues located throughout the United States. The Shelter is currently utilizing volunteers who assist with the maintenance of the kennel facilities, foster care (including Hospice care), rescue efforts, food, supplies, and transport.
Fostering and adoption give them a chance.
Rescue dogs and cats are hidden treasures waiting to shine. Not only will a rescue pup help break the cycle of pet overpopulation, but they’ll get the opportunity to have a long, happy life with you whether you foster or adopt.
From in-shelter support to at-home foster and hospice care, volunteers support every facet of our work. Together, we're creating a more humane world for animals.
